together/residency

the idea

Hello.

Like so many artists, I moved to New York City with a suitcase full of clothes and not really any idea WTF I was doing.

I had no plan, house, job or network of any type really, let alone the financial or other resources to further develop my established practice as an artist. In a certain sense it forced me to reevaluate my methods and approach. There were a few year stints of not being able to make new work at all, because I was preoccupied with figuring out how to feed myself and pay that real cool NYC rent.

But somehow over many years, I’ve managed to build a studio from the ground up, gathering tools, materials, a network of wonderful people and tangible resources along the way. Now, I’m opening up this space to a new generation of artists and designers in New York City through a one-day-a-week, month-long residency program.

The together/residency is a (micro) residency designed to address the very challenges I once faced: limited access to the necessary tools, space, and resources for making new work. With a focus on artists and designers either just out of school, managing full-time jobs or people with a developed practice but wanting to explore new methods and materials that they might not have the access to in their current setup, it aims to bridge that gap, providing resources for those looking to expand their existing practice or take the first step in building a new one.

general information

What I am offering is one person to work in my studio with me on a project of their choosing.  They have (virtually) free reign to use all my tools and pick my brain for guidance.  They will be able to come one day a week for four weeks, at which point they will need to have completed their project.

I will be working on my own work while they are there but I am happy to give insights and aid if needed.

This is geared toward people with a strong base in what they would like to accomplish but maybe need the refinements and guidance to see it through to completion in a safe and elegant way.

I will NOT be fabricating your work for you.

At the end of the final day we will take it into the photo studio and take professional photos of the work.  Thanks to my great friend Charles Billot for his kindness with regards to using the studio.

Once the residency has been completed the person must take their work with them.  The studio gets very busy sometimes and I don’t have a lot of storage room.  With that said, this is geared toward people building smaller items.  Think a lamp, chair, small sculpture etc.  NOT a dining table or some huge thing.

faq

What does it cost?
It doesn’t cost you anything other than the cost of your materials.  I am offering the use of the studio and tools for free.  This was created to provide access to tools and resources that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Does it include materials?
No you will have to purchase your own materials but I may be able to help source them for you and potentially arrange transportation depending on what exactly it is and where it is located.

What tools are available to use?
This list is pretty long at this point and I am unable to name them all here in a succinct way.  There is a section in application below that outlines some of the main things in the studio so maybe take a look there.  Most of those process will have secondary tools that go along with them.  So if your project get selected we can go over specific tooling required to complete what you would like to do.

Can I bring my own tools?
Yes however anything large will have to be discussed in advance.

Where is the studio?
Technically its Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  But be prepared for a long walk or nice bike ride as the nearest train is about a 25 min walk. (Graham Ave L or Nassau G)

What materials can I use?
This is an important one.  I don’t allow any toxic materials in the studio.  No spray painting, polyester resins, heavy fumes or contaminates etc.  My own practice does not include any petroleum base products, things that contain forever chemicals or things harmful to the environment etc.

I work with things that come from the earth and can just as easily go back to the earth.  Projects that align with this ethos will be much more likely to be selected.

Are there limits to what I can do in the space?
Yes keep in mind that this is my personal studio, so you will be working very closely with me. We will be sharing tools, space, sounds and air.

I work as part of a team can we all come and work together?
Potentially, however this will be addressed on a case by case basis.

Can I come four consecutive days?
No I don’t think so.  The days will most likely be either every Friday or Saturday, although there is some flexibility in what specific day it is.  Its difficult to block out large chunks of time in the studio I’m afraid.

application

Please fill it out as fully and thoughtfully as possible.

The first together/residency will happen in January and applications will be reviewed around November 25th.

Beyond that, there will be a rolling deadline for future together/residencies which I will do every other month or so depending on how busy the studio gets.

If anyone has any questions or are unable to access the application form, you can email me at together (at) cultivationobjects (dot) com
